Tooth Extractions Q & A

What is tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is having one or more of your teeth taken out. You might need to have a tooth extraction because of:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Broken tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Infected tooth
  • Severe gum disease
  • Teeth overcrowding

Wherever possible, Dr. Fine preserves your natural teeth. He has considerable experience with root canal treatment and fillings, as well as crowns, bridges, and other restorative dentistry procedures. However, it’s not always possible to save a tooth. Some are too severely damaged or diseased, in which case an artificial replacement is a better option.

Why would I need a tooth extraction for overcrowding?

Ideally, your teeth would line up neatly with no crossovers, but many people have teeth that don’t line up in this way. It could be that your mouth or jaw doesn’t have room for all your teeth, or you might have extra teeth that are causing overcrowding.

A common cause of overcrowding is wisdom teeth. These molars in the back of your mouth don’t start erupting until adulthood and sometimes don’t come through for years. In some cases, they don’t erupt at all, which is called an impaction.

Wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding or dig uncomfortably into your cheeks and gums. They’re the teeth most likely to be impacted, and can also make you more prone to cysts and infections.

Tooth extraction for overcrowding is a procedure that makes your mouth far more comfortable and improves your smile considerably.

What happens during and after a tooth extraction?

With tooth extraction, you need a local anesthetic that numbs the area around the tooth. Dr. Fine removes the tooth using forceps, gently loosening the tooth from its socket. If the tooth is impacted, he might need to cut away the tissue and bone around the tooth before he can extract it.

Once your tooth extraction is complete, you need to keep the socket where the tooth came from clean while it heals. Dr. Fine gives you all the aftercare information you need so that you can heal quickly and entirely.

You also need to decide how you want to replace the extracted teeth. Leaving a gap can spoil your smile and make you feel self-conscious, and could affect the way you talk and eat. Dr. Fine can discuss your options with you. The two main choices are dental implants and dentures.

Dental implants are artificial roots for a crown to fit on. The implants fit into your jawbone, provided you have healthy bones to support it.

If necessary, Dr. Fine can arrange a bone graft to build up the available bone for a dental implant. There are several methods for achieving this, and one procedure, called a socket preservation graft, takes place at the same time as your tooth extraction.
